What must I do to be saved?

It is the most urgent question a human being can ask. In the New Testament, when people realized the weight of their sins and the reality of eternity, they didn’t ask about church membership, social causes, or self-help tips. They asked the apostles directly: “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37).

At the Rock Springs Church of Christ, we believe that the answer to this question shouldn’t come from human traditions, modern creeds, or emotional guesswork. It must come strictly from the God-breathed, unchanging Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16). God doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, but He has made a way to dwell inside you, reconciling you to Himself and freeing you from the power of sin.

The Bible reveals a clear, beautiful, and complete path to salvation. Here is what scripture tells us we must do:

The Biblical Plan of Salvation

  1. Hear the Gospel

    Romans 10:17

Faith doesn’t appear out of thin air; it has a source. Scripture says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” To be saved, you must first hear the good news of Jesus Christ—His life, His death on the cross for your sins, and His resurrection.

  2. Believe in Jesus

    Hebrews 11:6 / John 8:24

Hearing must lead to a deep, heart-level trust. Jesus said, “If you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” You must believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the only savior of mankind.

  3. Repent of Your Sins

    Acts 2:38 / Luke 13:3

Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. It means turning your back on a life of self-will and sin, and turning toward God. Jesus stated clearly, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

  4. Confess Faith in Christ

    Romans 10:9-10 / Acts 8:37

True faith cannot remain hidden. You must be willing to openly declare what you believe—that Jesus Christ is the Lord and the Son of God. This public acknowledgment aligns your allegiance with His kingdom.

  5. Be Baptized

    Acts 2:38 / 1 Peter 3:21 / Acts 22:16

In the New Testament, baptism by immersion in water is always the precise moment a believer is united with Christ’s death and raised to walk in newness of life. It is not an “outward sign of an inward grace,” but an act of obedience for the remission (forgiveness) of sins where Christ’s blood washes your sins away.

  6. Remain Faithful

    Revelation 2:10

Salvation is the beginning of a lifelong journey. God calls us to live our lives as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2), growing in faith, sharing meals, studying the word, and encouraging one another daily. As Jesus promised: “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

The Ultimate Conclusion: Where Do You Stand?

Salvation is entirely a gift of God’s incredible grace, but a gift must be accepted on the terms of the one offering it.

When you look at the conversions in the New Testament, nobody waited weeks, months, or years to act once they understood the gospel. In Acts 22:16, a man named Ananias looked at Saul of Tarsus—who was praying and fasting but still carrying the weight of his sins—and asked a piercing question that echoes down to us today:

“And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”

If you have heard the word and believe it, why wait? A life of peace, true freedom from sin, and a home with a loving church family in Rock Springs is waiting for you.
